I’m so fucking sorry starfish

Day 69

Today I heard that the starfish populations in the Pacific Ocean are collapsing. Oh, and starfish populations on the east coast are also collapsing.

By collapsing I mean that their bright and beautiful limbs detach and crawl across the ocean floor, while their bodies dissolve into bubbling puddles of white sludge.

Scientist estimate 60-90% of starfish are affected. They’re not sure of the cause. Probably environmental. Or chemical. Or radioactive pollution. Or desalinized water from global warming. Or rising water temperatures from climate change. Or a bacteria. Or a virus. Or all of the above.

Well I’m no scientist, but I am pretty damn sure of the cause.

It’s the same reason the bees are dying, and the rhinos are extinct, and the gorillas are disappearing, and the tuna are radioactive, and the monarchs are almost gone.

Our civilization is killing the planet.

We are living through a systemic breakdown.

Full fucking collapse.

We must dismantle this culture of destruction before it takes every single thing down with it.

It’s the reason we’re alive at this time. It’s the only thing worth doing.

Find your loves.  The ones you hold closest to your heart. A man, a woman, a child, a tree, a dog, a mountain, a stream, an idea.

Fight for them. Like your life depends on it. It does. Like their lives depend on it. They do.

Look for the weak points in the system. The bigger it gets, the weaker it is. It cannot support its own weight. It is not strong. That is a lie we are told. Seek the truth.

WE are strong. When we connect to the land, we become brave. We learn to see, to feel, to hear. Pay attention. Be aware, hone your skills of survival, feel them losing their dull edge, like sharpening a knife. If you pray, pray for guidance. If you dream, ask for answers.

Learn to live with less. The things you own, own you. Do not be distracted from the task at hand. Stay focused. Spend as much time as possible outside. Feel yourself come alive under the stars and sun. Follow your instincts.

We must work together, but also separately. Don’t waste time waiting for numbers if you find something that can be done by 1, or 2. We cannot wait for critical mass. Be a tipping point. Be courageous.

Starfish are a keystone species in ocean habitats. They play a key role in their ecosystems. When they are gone, they are gone forever.

I’d say I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, and thank you to them,

but it’s just not enough. We’re way past the point where words could fix this.

This is going to take a miracle.

This is going to take a

WAR.

WAKE UP.

Writing this blog feels fairly futile tonight, just words on a page, when I should be in the streets screaming.

But as always, and from the bottom of my heart,

Thank you for listening.

I love you,

Natasha

  1. you writing from home is more effective as it reaches more of us. thank you again for sharing from your depths.

  2. Tasha,
This -IS- you screaming in the streets.
This has become -ALL OF US- screaming in the streets:
    the internet highway.
We hear you, and now we’re hearing each other.
    And others are hearing, and
    the earth IS responding.
    It is NOT futile.

    • Thank you Hides. I trust you, so if you say so, I believe you. But in the face of everything, this just doesn’t feel like enough, ya’ know? I love you with my whole heart. xoxo
